According to Sports Car International (SCI) automobile magazine, following are the world’s top listed sports cars which have shown extraordinarily spirited performance for the last few decades on the racing tracks.
The Ferrari 250 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) is an Italian luxury sports car produced by Ferrari S.p.A. It is nominated as the top sports car of all time producing approximately 300 horse power with the engine of Tipo 168/62 Comp. 3.0 L V12. Its most important innovation is its aerodynamic design for high speed and better stability.
The McLaren F1 is a modern sports car setting the record for the world’s fastest production car in March 1998. It has a lighter and streamlined body with a powerful engine of 6.1 L S70/2 V12. Despite the fact that it’s more of a road car, it won several races with the top speed of 242.8 mph (390.7 km/h).
The Jaguar E-Type is a British sports car produced by Jaguar Cars Ltd. The Jaguar E-Type was ranked first in March 2008. Two modified E-Type cars were made naming the Low Drag Coupe and Lightweight E-Type, both of which were raced and became the world champion.
The Lamborghini Miura SV (prototype P400SV) is another of an Italian high performance, two-seater, mid-engined and fastest production road car. It was named Miura, a famous type of fighting bull, having a 3929 cc displacement 60° 12-cylinder-V engine (four-stroke). Total 150 SVs were manufactured during 1971 to 1973.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was introduced in 1954 claiming to be the fastest production car with a 6-cylinder-inline (four-stroke), front-mounted engine. Its main body was steel featuring an innovative diagonal aluminum head for its considerably lower hood. It stands out for it’s first-ever fuel-injection system.
Porsche 911Carrera RS
The Porsche 911 is an all-time high performance sports car produced by German automobile manufacturer Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG making its public debut in 1963. It has an air-cooled, rear mounted, 130 metric horsepower (96 kW; 128 hp) flat-6 cylinder boxer engine and all round independent suspension. It is one of the oldest sports coupé still in production.
The Porsche 356 was originally produced by Austrian company Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH (1948-1949) and then later by German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH (1950-1965). It has an air-cooled pushrod OHV rear-mounted flat-4 engine. The major technical innovation are kits to convert a Porsche 356 Speedster to an electric vehicle.
The Porsche Carrera GT was ranked number one by Sports Car International in its list of Top Sports Cars of the 2000s. It uses a 5.7 L 68° (Slightly odd firing due to not being 72° V angle) V10, aluminium block and heads engine producing 612 hp (450 kW). It can accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 6.8 seconds.
1963 Shelby AC Cobra 289 is a British sports car produced by AC Cars. It had been using the Bristol long stroke straight-6 engine originally but later installed with 2.6 L V8 Ford Zephyr engine for attaining higher performance worldwide. The most important adjustment was the fitting of a tougher rear differential to handle the greater than before engine power.
The Mazda MX-5 is manufactured by Japanese Mazda Motor Corporation, making its debut in 1989. Staying to be the bestseller sports car of history, it is conceived as modern light weighted roadster having 2.0 L 160 PS (118 kW; 158 bhp) engine and bringing in itself new inventions till the day.
